Lima -At least 20 people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed and 30 others injured when a bus plunged into a canyon on a road in northern Peru.
The bus slid down a 100-meter (328-foot) slope in the remote northern area of Libertad on Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said.
Due to the remoteness of the area, news of the crash took hours to filter through. The bus traveled 340 kilometers (211 miles) from Tayabamba to Trujillo and took 14 hours to complete due to poor road conditions.
Traffic accidents are common in Peru due to poor roads, high speeds, lack of signs and poor enforcement by authorities.
